Longevity

I got my mitts on a copy of Thrasher Magazine‘s 30 year anniversary issue. I remember the first ones on newsprint and how great it was to have information about what was going on in skateboarding after Skateboarder Magazine had gone away. I would have so many old ones if I hadn’t cut out the pages with the best photographs and stuck them on my bedroom wall. I essentially had Thrasher wall paper that grew with every issue.
Subscriptions were fine but I always enjoyed the excuse (any excuse) to go down to Gravity (my local skate shop), get my copy, discuss what was in it and see what new stuff the shop had in. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that 1981 was that long ago and who would have thought that Thrasher and Gravity would be around after all this time.

It’s interesting to think about how many of us are still skating after more than 30 years. When I was thirteen, I swore I would never quit. Life may have got in the way for a while but skateboarding was always there. The other constant in life has been music. Maybe it’s a product of starting both things at such a young age. Playing music in elementary school just made listening to it even more interesting and skating just got in my blood back then.
These days I don’t think I could get any deeper into either thing than I am now. I have skating and music still going strong. I get to Gravity once a week if I can and skate more often than that. I go to rock shows, contemplate my own music creations and help run a record label. Things are busy for sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Cheers to Thrasher for keeping up the skating stoke for all this time and Gravity for being my local shop. Thanks especially to Dave, Steve and Mike for keeping Gravity going.
Support your local skate shop and your local music scene. There are lifelong friends in there.
Cheers!
